Hot topic - cool energy strategy

In the recent period with high temperatures it was once again highlighted just how vulnerable our energy system can be during extreme weather conditions. Driven by persistent heat, lower-than-expected wind power generation, and massive electricity demand, the 15-minute price for consumers rose to over €1.20 per kWh during the evening hours of 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM. On the wholesale market, prices exceeded €900 per MWh.

Energy specialists know that extreme heat not only drives up electricity prices but also affects the performance of energy systems. At an outdoor temperature of 35°C, solar panel output can drop by 10% to 15%. Additionally, cooling battery storage systems requires extra energy during these hot days.

And yet, at Elektro Internationaal’s Mirgrid Live Lab, we still achieve a net-zero energy balance, even on these extreme days.

How? Our self-managing microgrid looks beyond mere generation and storage. During the day, excess solar energy is stored in the battery. After sunset, we use that energy intelligently to pre-cool the building for the following day—precisely when electricity prices peak. This way, we combine energy storage, forecasting, and intelligent control into a single, optimally functioning system.

It is precisely on days like these that an intelligent microgrid proves its value: by looking ahead rather than reacting after the fact.

Curious to see what this looks like in practice? Come visit Elektro Internationaal’s LIVE LAB in Woerden. That is where the energy system of the future is operational.
