Onshore Power (even when there's grid congestion)
On May 21, 2026, colleagues Jeroen Dirkzwager and Nick Ruiter attended the Walstroom Festival at GeoFort in Herwijnen. There, various branche related companies showed what’s happening in the field of energy supply for shipping. As a member of the Onshore Power Supply Network (OPSN), Elektro Internationaal was, of course, part of it.
The energy transition is in full swing on the water and along the shore as well. No more running diesel engines to generate electricity when docked, but properly plugged in instead. That’s the motto.
For this purpose, Connect4Shore develops shore power units – charging options for shipping with a backend transaction system based on kWh consumption. Elektro Internationaal assembles these shore power units on behalf of Connect4Shore and installs the controls. The unit shown at the festival in Herwijnen has 4 connection points (2x32A and 2x63A). The units can be configured in a variety of ways.
Of course, the prerequisite is that electricity is available from the grid. If not? Then we’re happy to share our vision on tackling grid congestion in the port with a DC microgrid. Because that way, you can definitely achieve energy efficiency along the shore too – and we’re not exaggerating!
